These days, people are inevitably being influenced by advertisements on television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and other media outlets, including the Internet. Opinions about the effects of advertising are mixed, and it could be argued that there are more benefits than drawbacks.
On the positive side, many people support advertising for several reasons. To begin with, advertisements inform consumers about the choice they have; meaning that, without advertising they would have less choice. Also, as a form of modern art, advertising is used by companies to promote sales, and this is a key part of modern business and therefor it is beneficial to economic growth. For example, by increasing sales, advertising expands the market, which in turn creates jobs and raise the general living standards. That is to say, without advertising there would be higher unemployment.
On the negative side, sometimes advertising leads people to live in a consumer culture that might be out of reality. Today the high sales of popular consumer goods and services reflect the power of advertising rather than the real needs of the society in which they are sold. Indeed there are cases in which advertising confuses the buyers who later feel cheated. This is probably because people are often tempted to buy things they do not really need with money they do not really have. While advertising appeals to people of all ages, it may affect children in particular. Since children are easily influenced by advertisements, they put pressure on parents to buy them things.
To conclude, despite its negative effects, the advertising plays an important role in the modern society. That may be why many people believe that a booming advertising industry is an indicator of an affluenct society and that there should be no need for advertising whatever when people are poor, cold and hungry.
