Cover Letter
Prepare a cover letter (up to 500 words) seeking a place in the MIT Sloan Master of Finance (M.Fin.) Program. Describe your short-term and long-term goals and provide specific reasons why you want to enter the MIT Sloan M.Fin. Program. The cover letter should conform to business standards and be addressed to Mr. Rod Garcia, Director of Admissions.
Resume
Please prepare a business resume that includes your employment history in reverse chronological order, with titles, dates, and whether you worked part-time or full-time. Your educational record should also be in reverse chronological order and should indicate dates of attendance and degree(s) earned. Other information appropriate to a business resume is welcomed and encouraged. The resume should not be more than one page in length (up to 50 lines).
Essays
We are interested in learning more about you and how you work, think, and act. For each essay, please provide a brief overview of the situation followed by a detailed description of your response. Please limit the experiences you discuss to those which have occurred in the past three years.
In each of the essays please describe in detail what you thought, felt, said, and did.
- Essay 1: Please describe a time when you worked effectively with people to accomplish an important result. (300 words or fewer, limited to one page)
- Essay 2: Please describe a situation in which you were able to use persuasion to successfully convince someone to see things your way. (300 words or fewer, limited to one page)
Career Goals
In addition to the two essays, we will ask you to indicate your career area(s) of interest, explain what attracts you to your career choice(s), and describe how the MIT Sloan M.Fin. Program will help you to meet these goals. (300 words or fewer, limited to one page)
Recommendations
Please submit three letters of recommendation. One of the recommendations should be from an academic source.
Recommenders must submit recommendations online.
Please choose recommenders who are able to provide specific answers to the following questions:
- How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant?
- How does the applicant stand out from others in a similar capacity?
- Please give an example of the applicant's impact on a person, group, or organization.
- Please give a representative example of how the applicant interacts with other people.
- Which of the applicant's personal or professional characteristics would you change?
- Please tell us anything else you think we should know about this applicant.
Academic Records (Transcripts)
Please scan and upload copies of your academic records.
Relevant Coursework: If applicable, please include details for economics, finance, math/statistics, or other relevant coursework completed, using short answer fields in application.
Applicants invited to interview will be required to provide an official transcript from each school attended.
Test Scores
The GMAT or GRE is required of all applicants and must be taken before submitting your application. Once your online application is submitted, we will not allow replacement of your test scores. Test scores are only valid for five years; therefore, only tests taken after January 1, 2007 will be considered. It’s important to be aware that as of August 1, 2011, the GRE general test is changing. Here is information from the GRE about the revised test changes:
M.Fin. applicants whose first language is not English must submit IELTS (preferred) or TOEFL scores. The IELTS/TOEFL requirement may be waived for those who have earned or by the time of enrollment in the M.Fin. Program will have earned a bachelor's degree from a school where English is the primary language of instruction. A 2-year graduate degree from an English speaking school is not sufficient to waive the IELTS/TOEFL requirement.

The application fee is payable by credit card online when you apply. You will be prompted for payment information after pressing the “Submit Application” button. If you wish to pay by means other than a credit card, you must send an email to
Submission of your Online Application
The online application is due at 3 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline dates. You may complete and submit the online application at any time before the deadline. Save your work before moving to the next page and print a copy for your own records.
Interview Policy
Interviews are by invitation only. Our goal is to interview all candidates accepted into our programs. An invitation to interview thus signals that your application has reached an advanced stage of consideration, but does not guarantee admission.
Candidates will be invited to interviews by email, up until the decision deadlines.
